Blog 3 term 2 Portraiture Painting

Karen Kilimnick

Musee Dart Moderne De La Ville De Paris / Arc Mary Calling up a Storm, 1996 Oil on canvas Courtesy 303 Gallerynd t

I thought this work has beautiful colours that brings out the portrait of the girl, with the mixture of dark blue, purple and little tiny brush strokes of black creating branches and the way the hair flows creating a black flow creating other images.

Suzette, 1912-14, oil on panel. Collection of Christchurch Art Gallery , presented by Mrs M Good, London, 1975.

This work has drawn me into it with its bland colours but great drawing and how it has a very unique mixture of colours and the drawing style. it does not have bright colours giving it a type of vintage feeling especially the type of clothing the women in the portrait is wearing.

The process i went through is having my photo taken then swapping images with Michael, then having to create a portrait for us to paint on then to enlarge the photos of Michael to get a greater view of his facial features, then mixing different oil paint to get his right skin tone and to have mixing his skin tone. later trying to use turps to get the right amount of oil paint on him so it mixes well, later finishing it then to finally do the background to which i had chosen the colours grey and blue bringing the painting of Michael out better.

I believe it has gone better than i had imagined it to be, the skin tone is not that bad and i still think i can do better and my model believes it is okay. And i think this is a good representation of Art. The good is that i did better than i excepted and it looks just like Michael but just need to work more on the facial features, the bad is that i could have mixed the skin tone better and the background could have been more brighter with the blue.

To become better at copying faces and painting and mixing skin tones better.

The most important thing i have learn't was to not use too much oil paint and turps.
